Welcome back to the Woods to Wedges blog! All sorts of golfers have different dreams, but a common one is the dream of sending a golf ball flying ever further down the fairway. One thing we hear time and again from the golfers seeking lessons from us is “I want to hit my drives further”. The best thing for that is to come on in for instruction from our expert PGA professionals, but the next best thing you can do is to read and digest this!
Select the Right Driver
The most expensive, top of the line driver isn’t going to magically make you a better golfer. However, a set of custom-fitted golf clubs can significantly improve your game. Clubs that are the right fit for you mean that you’re not expending energy fighting the clubs, they’re doing the hard work for you. If you’re adjusting just to deal with a driver that’s too long, you might want to consider upgrading.
Speaking of a driver that’s too long, that brings us to things you can think about when selecting your driver. Different people have different needs, but more and more golfers are shifting to shorter shafts on their drivers. You might think a longer shaft can generate more distance and swing speed, but you tend to give up the accuracy of hitting the ball in the sweet spot. With a shorter shaft, you can target it more consistently, leading to more yards on the fairway.
Find the Sweet Spot
On that note of finding the sweet spot, that’s the best way to get the most consistent and longest drives. It’s like hitting a baseball – yeah, any part of the bat “works”, but there’s a specific part where you get that thunderous, iconic crack noise as the ball rockets off. On your driver, that’s the center of your club face!
Swing Faster, Not Harder
Swinging faster might sound like the answer to having a further drive, but your ability to target the center of your club head goes out the window. Instead, having a faster swing that isn’t necessarily any harder is the way to go. When done right, a faster swing is among the best ways to add the most distance. This is going to be best done with one of our expert PGA instructors guiding you, giving you personalized lessons and advice on your game.
