Getting the right set and learning about them is everything you need to start summer 2026 off on the right note!

In this blog, we will run through what kinds of golf clubs you need as a beginner in 2026 to start shooting some great rounds.

Why You Don’t Need a Full Set of Clubs Right Away

Many new golfers are asking the same question: What golf clubs do I actually need as a beginner? To break the good news, you do not need every club in your arsenal. After all, you’re not about to go out on the PGA Tour as a seasoned vet who’s used every club there is; you’re just getting yourself into it for the first time.

In fact, many beginners make the mistake of buying too many clubs right out of the gate. The correct approach here is to focus on a few clubs that work in multiple areas of the course and are designed to help build your confidence. Most longtime players, and even pro players, carry about 14 clubs in their bags. Each one is designed for a certain type of carry on the ball or for if you are far enough away to use one over the other.

When a new golfer starts to learn the basics of the game, their primary goals should revolve around making consistent contact with the ball, develop your confidence, understanding distance control, and learning the fundamentals of a proper swing.

And guess what? You can do all of that as a beginner with a small set of clubs. It allows for less confusion and for you to focus on improving yourself. We recommend you start with a set of 7-10 clubs, which is more than enough. It can be a driver, one wood, a couple of irons, a sand wedge, a pitching wedge, and a putter.

Breakdown of Each Golf Club Needed

Driver

Of course, every player needs a driver, designed to help with the longest distance at the start of a hole. The beginner-level drivers of today feature larger clubheads, and they also include an adjustable setting. It allows golfers to reduce slices on the ball and improve the launch of the ball. A slice is just another way to say that the ball curves sharply in the air away from your dominant hand, meaning that it will miss the fairway and result in a loss of distance.

Woods and Hybrids

Before you can get around to the long-distance irons, you have to learn the ways of a fairway wood or hybrid, as they are also called. They are some of the most recommended clubs for beginners. A 5-wood or a 4-hybrid can be an excellent option for longer shots from the fairway, rough, or even off the tee if the hole is short enough not to need a driver.

For beginners, hybrids are significantly easier to hit than traditional long irons. Once you learn more about clubs over time, you’ll find that it won’t always be the case, which is good.

As a side note, when researching, you’ll probably come across a 3-wood as an option as well. We’ve noticed that lots of golfers don’t run with this club as much. 5-woods and 4-hybrids carry better advantages like having more loft for higher ball launches, ease of use, shorter shaft and clubhead size for better control, and better carry. Be sure to ask a professional about this when you go in to buy a new set!

Irons, Wedges and the Putter

Taking a look at the irons, if there’s one club you should spend your time practicing with the most, it’s this club. Iron’s more than most of the other clubs in your set are perfect for practicing because they work for everything in your swing. You hit them long distance, and you hit them short distance, and both times you have to function with a different swing.

For beginners, we recommend adding a 7-iron, 8-iron, and 9-iron. For many beginners, hybrids are significantly easier to hit than traditional long irons, which is why you don’t need those long irons like the 6-iron or 5-iron immediately.

When looking at the sand wedge and pitching wedge, just like the regular irons, these clubs are all about approach shots and setting up scoring opportunities for when you need to putt. Improving on your short game is the difference between shooting a par or birdie on a hole as opposed to a bogey or worse.

When it comes to the putter, pick one that feels comfortable in your hands and has good alignment with its design. Potentially half of the shots you take in a normal round of golf will be from the putter, so always be sure to test one out before you buy it.

Golf Club Fitting REALLY Matters for Beginners

Golf club fitting is a process where we analyze your swing patterns and body measurements, and then we use that data to match you with the exact club specifications that work best, relating to the shaft, club length, head type, and grip size. It’s an extensive process, and you might assume that this is only done for more experienced players, but there’s no one MORE suited for this process than beginners.

Something else that pairs well with club fitting is testing the clubs out, and you can do that through golf lessons and coming into our store to test them. Don’t overlook golf lessons; they really do help! As we said, you need to learn the fundamentals; not even the best clubs in the world can fix what hasn’t been learned.

If you’re just getting started in golf this summer, a beginner’s set of clubs is just the thing you need. And remember, success in the game of golf comes from a combination of multiple things that this blog addresses. Finding the right clubs, getting proper instruction from lessons, and more. Start simple, focus on the fundamentals, and enjoy the journey.

Visit our website and learn more about golf club fitting, or where to set up a golf lesson with one of our golf instructors. If you have any questions or are looking to buy a new set, give us a call or reach out through our contact form. We look forward to helping!

Golf Club FAQ

How many golf clubs does a beginner really need?

Beginners don’t need a full 14-club set right away. You want to start with around 7-10 clubs. This includes a driver, a 5-wood or 4-hybrid, a few irons (6-iron, 7-iron, and 8-iron as recommended), a pitching wedge, a sand wedge, and a putter. These clubs are enough for a beginner to learn the fundamentals, build on their confidence, and improve their scores when playing on the course.
