Practice to Perfect your Putting with Golf Lessons from Woods to Wedges

W2W March 23

Hello and welcome back to our blog here at Woods to Wedges. Today, we thought it would be a good idea to talk about golf lessons, and improving your short game. Putting is an important part of the course, and taking golf lessons where there’s a focus on the skill can help improve your score!

Today, we’re going to run through three brief tips from our golf lessons that you can deploy yourself to try and gain some short-game improvement!

Lead with Your Off Hand

Think about when you throw a baseball. If you’re a righty, before you throw the ball you aim where you want it to go with your left. It’s serving as a guide. The same is true on the green; you need to use your non-dominant hand to direct. That makes it just as important as your dominant hand!

Missing Wide

Now that we’ve gotten you started by using your nondominant hand as your guide hand, let’s touch on fixing the tendency to miss wide to the left or right. For us righties who miss to the left (and vice-versa), make sure that your trail elbow is lower on a vertical plane than your lead elbow, this should get the direction of your swing more out-to-in.

If you’re a righty missing to the right, or a lefty to the left, then one of the easiest things you can do to help is to simply stand a bit closer to the ball. Failing that, you can lean more into your lead leg, putting more weight onto it.

Distance Control

Hitting the ball too hard or too softly is another pain point that golfers face. The key to distance control in your golf lessons is to roll through the ball. Take an open stance, with your putter shaft leaning in the direction you want to go. Before you swing, look slightly ahead of the ball, and when swinging keep the head low, beyond the point where the ball is struck. Try not to hit up on the ball, which can make the ball hop unpredictably.
