If you play the game regularly, you’ve probably been around a golf simulator at least once. Golf simulators are starting to have a bigger presence around the world as technology advances and improves at reading us and how we move physically. The technology behind these simulators is advancing at a rate where we may see it used everywhere you go. In terms of golf, you’ll see it all over in shops, golf domes, in country clubs, and at professional sporting events for golf tournaments in the PGA and many other leagues. But how does the data stack up? Is the data on these golf simulators really that accurate?
In this blog, we will break down how the data works in a golf simulator and whether it’s accurate enough to make you a better golfer.
What Are Golf Simulators?

One of the most important things we can do as a golf shop that owns golf simulators is explain to you what a golf simulator is before we break down how the data works. A golf simulator offers a large number of benefits to golfers! A simulator is not just about hitting the balls for the sake of practicing your swing and adjusting on the fly. Golf simulators track and analyze certain aspects of your swing and ball contact to simulate on the screen how it would look.
An underrated aspect of the simulator is that it can require less time for you to understand and study your swing patterns, so that that way when you go on the course or the practice range, you have it memorized efficiently. It can eliminate any potential worry of not getting an instructor for a lesson if they are super busy and locked up with other clients to teach. That being said, we do also recommend that you have an instructor there to analyze you in the simulator, as it gives a second opinion on how to analyze the data.
These golf simulators have screens that are designed to absorb impact and project the virtual course you’re playing on, whether it’s world renowned course or just a regular practice range. Something that will entice a golfer who wants to explore many of the biggest courses in the world will find great pleasure in what any simulator can offer, especially our very own Trackman Simulator, which can simulate dozens of the most well-known courses in the world.
How To Break Down the Data of These Simulators

Prepare yourself… We are about to get very nerdy with this breakdown of how the data works in golf simulators. This is where the fun begins!
Obviously, you start out by placing your ball on the tee or the ground, and you take the club of your choosing, and you take the swing. Once you do that, the simulator will start showing all of this data on your screen: your ball speed, spin on the ball, launch angle, carry distance, etc. The mat you stand on to hit and the camera system in these simulators track everything in motion to measure anything you need.
There are two things in one as well with these simulators; there’s the launch monitor part of it, and then there’s the simulator portion. The launch monitor is what the swinging of the club is for, and then the results after are what the simulator is for. One is motion-driven, the other is purely data-driven.
The actual data itself is a minefield to look at, but once you understand it well enough, you’ll know it like the back of your hand. Club head speed, which measures the velocity of the club head at impact, the dispersion patterns, where you see where the ball lands, and how spread out from the target it is, or even something as simple as testing to see if your clubs and equipment are working correctly.
